Dangers on the Internet

As quickly and easily as you can access data on the Internet, you can also put yourself in danger:

  • Malicious programs can run on your computer unnoticed while you are surfing. In this way, viruses can be infiltrated and data on your computer can be spied on or modified.
  • Even harmless-looking images can contain malicious commands.

It is true that web accesses are already scanned for viruses and malicious programs at the network node of your institution. Nevertheless, caution is advised when surfing: You can never be sure what content or commands will be executed on your computer when a Web page is accessed by your browser.

The next few pages will show you what to look out for when surfing and how to protect yourself against attacks.
