As a result, the topic of IT security is coming more and more into focus. The focus is on the protection goals of information security.

If information from your institution or about you gets to unauthorized persons, this often has serious consequences. For example, if confidential research data and results are disclosed, they could result in economic penalties for those involved in externally funded research, among other consequences. The confidentiality of information must therefore be protected.

It is also important that data be accurate and unaltered (integrity). Unnoticed falsified data, such as manipulated measurement data in the building control system of a university, can lead to incorrect decisions in the control of technical systems - therefore, the integrity of information is another protection goal.

And finally, the availability of information must be ensured - it must be available when it is needed. Even a failure of the e-mail system lasting several hours can disrupt and intensively slow down an entire university in its manifold task performance.

Please do not underestimate the importance that information about you can have for attackers! They often look for a supposedly weak link in the chain in order to break it.
